How to calculate the volume and weight of goods in air freight?

2024-09-20 13:41

In daily life, unlike sea and land transportation, air transportation mainly uses airplanes as the carrier of transportation. Due to the significantly higher purchase and operation maintenance costs of airplanes compared to cars and ships, air freight prices are slightly higher and transportation speeds are faster compared to other modes of transportation. So, how is the air freight price calculated? Let's take a detailed look together below.

PART 01   Air freight billing weight for heavy and abandoned goods

Air freight billing weight is the final weight of a batch of goods used to calculate air freight(The general units are: grams, kilograms, or pounds)
    The professional terms for freight weight generally include heavy cargo, abandoned cargo (soaked cargo), volumetric weight, and actual weight (gross weight).

1、Heavy goods
domestic:Heavy goods refer to goods weighing over 1 kilogram per 6000 cubic centimeters or over 166.67 kilograms per 1 cubic centimeter (CBM).

internationalGoods weighing over 1 kilogram per 166 cubic inches or over 1 pound per 166 cubic inches.The chargeable weight of heavy goods is its actual weight (gross weight)
The gross weight unit of the goods is kilograms, and the minimum unit for billing weight is 0.5 kilograms or 1 kilogram (determined by each airline). The minimum unit is 0.5 kilograms. When the weight is less than 0.5 kilograms, it is calculated as 0.5 kilograms; When it exceeds 0.5 kilograms but is less than one kilogram, it shall be calculated as one kilogram. When the minimum unit is 1 kilogram, any weight less than 1 kilogram shall be calculated as 1 kilogram. If the gross weight unit of the goods is pounds, when the goods are less than one pound, they shall be calculated as one pound.

2、sell goods in large quantity(Also known as soaked goods)

Use A to represent actual weight, B to represent volumetric weight,

If A>B, then the goods are heavy goods, otherwise they are abandoned goods.

Domestic
Selling refers to goods that weigh less than 1 kilogram per 6000 cubic centimeters or less than 166.67 kilograms per cubic meter.

International:Goods weighing less than 1 kilogram per 366 cubic inches or less than 1 pound per 166 cubic inches.

Sell goods based on their volumetric weight as billing weight ,

The calculation method is:Measure the longest, widest, and highest parts of the goods separately, regardless of their geometric shape, in centimeters, meters, or inches.

Volume weight (kg)=Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm) ÷ 6000

=Volume of goods (cubic meter) × 167kg

=Volume of goods (cubic inches) ÷ 366

Volume weight (pounds)=cargo volume (cubic inches) ÷ 166

PART 02   Example explanation of air freight billing weight

Example 1:

The dimensions of the outer packaging are 90cm in length, 55cm in width, and 45cm in height. The actual overweight is 30KG

Volume weight=90 x 55 x 45/6000=39.19, less than 1 kilogram is calculated as 1 kilogram, volume weight=40kg

Volume weight>actual weight,So the billing weight here is based on a volumetric weight of 40kg (which belongs to the category of abandoned goods)

Example 2

The dimensions of the outer packaging are 90cm in length, 55cm in width, and 45cm in height. The actual overweight is 45KG

Volume weight=90 x 55 x 45/6000=39.19, less than 1 kilogram is calculated as 1 kilogram, volume weight=40kg

Volume weight<actual weight ,The billing weight here is based on the actual weight of 45kg (which belongs to heavy goods)

notes

1. Air freight billing weight, in layman's terms, is the larger of the actual weight (gross weight) and volumetric weight.

2. Domestic air freight forwarders charge weights based on/6000 or x167;

3. The chargeable weight for international express delivery is/5000;

4. The chargeable weight for international sea freight is the same as that for air freight.

PART 03   Air freight billing weight for multiple items of goods

In the case of centralized consignment, there may be multiple items of goods under the same waybill, including both abandoned and heavy goods. At this time, the chargeable weight of the batch of goods is calculated by taking the larger of the actual weight and volumetric weight as the final chargeable weight.
